No! An approved certificate of formation for your LLC or Corporation (or other entity) allows you to merely transact business GENERALLY within the State of Texas. Texas and some local governments require certain industries, professions, and trades to have an additional license. For example, as a lawyer, I can operate my law firm as an LLC, but just getting an LLC doesn’t mean that I can give legal advice. I need a license to practice law in addition to the LLC.
A sales tax ID number is NOT the same as an IRS Tax ID or EIN. A sales tax ID is issued by the State of Texas and allows you to collect and pay sales tax. A Federal IRS Tax ID or EIN operates more like a social security number for the business – it allows you to report and pay income taxes, open a bank account, employ employees, etc.
